When my husband and I bought this home five years ago, we had never really had a master bedroom suite before. As we walked through the house we realized that the "big bedroom" would now be ours! We were delighted, especially since our new home had an amazing master suite, with lots of space and two walk in closets!
When we moved in, it was clear that the bedroom had not taken precedence for the new owners. They had great taste, and did a very nice job in the kitchen, but the rest of the house needed paint, and some serious TLC.
Here is a photo of our bedroom before we furnished it:
Obviously awful, haha! We literally spent the first 3 years of our marriage without a bed frame. Just those amazing box springs still in plastic because the warranty is voided if they touch the ground 🤣
Well, when our marketing company started taking off and we were ready to take salaries, we could splurge on the extras like bedroom furniture!
This was when I truly discovered Hayneedle. I literally looked at thousands of beds. I think I went to the 80th page on all the king size beds that come in espresso or black, and I FINALLY found the one for me.
I absolutely LOVE the lines on this bed. At the time upholstered seemed like an absolute MUST, though I wouldn't necessarily make that a hill to die on anymore. I still love the dark wood, though! I would definitely keep up with that well into the foreseeable future.
So let me talk you through this a little bit:
MATCHING vs ECLECTIC
We chose to go with a full matching set of bedroom decor. I've never really done it that way before, but I wanted a cohesive feel to the room, and I thought that would be the best way to achieve it. Also, our room in our old house was giant, so we wanted to make sure we had enough furniture to make the space feel livable. I wanted a good vanity with lots of storage, so that was another thing I was searching hard for. In the end, I wasn't able to find a set with a vanity that worked, but close enough!
So the brand of this bed is Najarian, and unfortunately I'm not able to find an exact match to link, but you can check out other beds that are similar here.
The furniture arrived, and it was SO great because the delivery people were willing to bring it up to the room so I didn't have to carry it. This furniture is SO heavy and it is amazing quality. I chose to get a tall dresser, two night stands and a king size bed. We also got a vanity, but we ended up having to do one that is a different brand because this set did not include a vanity.
This vanity was the one that most closely went with the rest of the furniture we chose. I love the dark brown finish, and I brought in gray to pick up the walls and the accents.
I wanted to bring in either navy blue or mint, but my husband wasn't in favor, so all I was able to get away with was adding those soft mint drapes.
I didn't have the whole thing ready all at once. Yes, our furniture came in one fell swoop, but the rest of the accents and bedding did not come together until much later. It was a big process finding all the right pieces.
Here are the lessons I learned:
1. Stick with a single type of metal for your room. I chose chrome/silver. Don't take shortcuts on this one or the place will start to look very mix and match.
2. Splurge, if you have to. I bit the bullet on the bedding for our room (linked below) and I'm very glad I did. It's all exactly what I was looking for.
3. Don't rush. Perfection takes time! Give yourself a chance to form the vision for what you want the space to look like before investing in pieces.
